Clothing That Cares: Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary’s Sustainable Uniform and Merchandise Solution

At LUCKE, we believe that clothing should do more than just look good. It should support people, planet, and purpose. That’s why we were thrilled to work with Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, a Tasmanian wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center, to create a collection of sustainable clothing solutions that align with their commitment to conservation and education.

A Tailored Approach for Bonorong’s Needs

Bonorong needed clothing solutions for three key areas:

  1. Staff Uniforms – Employees work across both indoor and outdoor settings, requiring comfortable, durable apparel that can handle varying conditions.
  2. Merchandise Store – A range of ethical and sustainable apparel for visitors, including kids’ and adults’ tees and hoodies.
  3. Wild Ride Challenge Fundraising Event – A special collection designed for their annual Wild Ride Challenge to support wildlife conservation efforts.

For all three projects, sustainability and functionality were top priorities. The clothing had to be high quality, comfortable for daily wear, and made from responsibly sourced materials.

The Chosen Collection: Sustainable, Ethical, and Built to Last

After careful consideration, we selected a mix of garments that offer durability, comfort, and a reduced environmental impact:

  • Unisex Organic Cotton Tee – A staple for everyday wear, made from GOTS-certified organic cotton for a soft, breathable fit.
  • Kids Organic Cotton Tee – A great GOTS-certified addition for kids, that is also produced in a Fair Wear Leader Factory.
  • Recycled Fleece Jacket – Designed for warmth and made from recycled materials, ideal for those chilly Tasmanian days.

  • Recycled Polyester Tech Jacket – Lightweight and versatile, providing weather resistance for staff working in outdoor settings.

  • 60% Organic Cotton / 40%  Recycled Polyester Shirt – A unique, high-quality shirt that adds to the professional and polished look of the team.
  • Organic Cotton Polo – A smart-casual option, perfect for staff uniform made from GOTS-certified organic cotton and also produced in a Fair Wear Leader Factory.

  • Organic Cotton Hoodie – A cozy, stylish hoodie made with sustainability in mind, ideal for both staff and retail customers. 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton and also produced in a Fair Wear Leader Factory.

  • Dad Cap – A classic cap made from organic and recycled cotton, combining practicality with eco-conscious materials.

Why Organic Cotton and Recycled Polyester Matter

One of the key focuses of this collaboration was ensuring that the materials used in these garments aligned with sustainability principles.

  • Organic Cotton: Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers, reducing soil and water contamination. It also requires less water than traditional cotton farming and promotes healthier working conditions for farmers by eliminating exposure to toxic chemicals. The result? Softer, more breathable clothing that’s better for both people and the planet.
  • Recycled Polyester: Traditional polyester is derived from fossil fuels and contributes to microplastic pollution. By using recycled polyester, we help divert plastic waste from landfills and oceans while reducing the energy and water required for production. This material retains the durability and performance of virgin polyester but with a significantly lower environmental footprint.

Going the Extra Mile: Fair Wear Leader Factories

Bonorong chose to go the extra mile by selecting products made in Fair Wear Leader factories where possible. Fair Wear Foundation (FWF) is an independent organisation that works to improve labour conditions in the garment industry. A Fair Wear Leader factory ensures that workers receive fair wages, safe working conditions, and respect for their rights. By supporting these factories, Bonorong is not only prioritising sustainable materials but also advocating for ethical labor practices in the supply chain.

Prioritising People and Planet

Every piece in this collection reflects our shared commitment to ethical and sustainable clothing. By using organic cotton, recycled materials, and responsible production practices, we ensure that every purchase and every uniform contributes to a healthier planet.

The collaboration between LUCKE and Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary is a perfect example of how businesses and conservation groups can work together to make positive change. Whether it’s staff working in the field, visitors supporting conservation efforts through ethical merchandise, or participants in the Wild Ride Challenge sporting sustainable event gear, every choice matters.

We’re proud to support Bonorong and their mission to protect wildlife through education and rescue efforts. By choosing clothing that cares, we ensure that sustainability isn’t just an option, it’s the standard.
